Inspiring the next generation

Published: 22 January 2024

At BioAscent, we are passionate about helping to inspire the next generation of drug hunters. Members of the team are often invited to speak to school pupils as well as undergraduates about the career options available. In December 2023, Laura Bain, a scientist in the Chemistry team, visited Our Lady’s High School in Motherwell to speak to higher and advanced higher pupils about working in drug discovery.

Pupils at the school were keen to understand more about careers and jobs in science, which prompted the invitation for Laura to visit the school to speak and share her experiences from her career to date.

Laura talked about her role as a medicinal chemist and explained the different stages of drug discovery, and the potential career options available. She also highlighted that what they are learning now in the classroom, is useful in her day-to-day job. Laura discussed the analytical techniques, NMR and LCMS, highlighting just how important these and other analytical methods are in drug discovery.

Laura says, “It was a pleasure to speak with the pupils at Our Lady’s High School, and I was really impressed with their engagement and interest in working in science and drug discovery. I hope I have managed to inspire some of them to follow that path!”
