Ada Lovelace Day 2024 – celebrating and inspiring women in STEM

Published: 08 October 2024

Ada Lovelace Day is an international day of celebration that aims to raise the profile of women in STEM to inspire others and create role models for young and old alike.

At BioAscent we have a diverse and experienced team from a range of different backgrounds. To mark Ada Lovelace Day 2024, we have asked a few of our female colleagues to share what inspired them to pursue a career in science, and why they think it is important to celebrate women in science.

Michalina Lewicka‑Yammine, Business Development Director, Europe

"I was an active and curious kid with an endless list of questions. Simple 'yes' or 'no' answers weren't satisfying, which ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in science. My fascination with the human brain began when I was in primary school. Therefore, pursuing a Master's and PhD in developmental neuroscience was an obvious direction. The complexity and capabilities of our brain are astounding, and understanding how it works can unlock so many mysteries about human behaviour, cognition, and even emotions. This curiosity drives a relentless quest for knowledge and discovery.

"Celebrating women in science is crucial because diversity brings different perspectives and ideas, which are essential for innovation and progress. Women have made incredible contributions to science, and recognising their achievements not only honours their work but also inspires future generations of girls to pursue their passions in STEM fields. Marie Sklodowska-Curie's pioneering work, perseverance, and dedication despite facing difficulties is an inspiration and legacy to encourage and empower women in STEM. She is one of many women who have made a significant impact on society.

"Working at BioAscent is a great match for me due to the opportunity to contribute to the development of new therapies and treatments. This aligns with my desire to make a meaningful difference in the world through science."

Emily Ritchie, Associate Scientist in Biosciences

“When I was in school, I always chose the subjects I enjoyed most. For me, this was science, particularly biology. I have always been amazed when learning about the capabilities of the human body and I’m so lucky to say that something I’m so passionate about has become my career.

“It is encouraging to see such an improvement in the number of women studying STEM degrees, the majority of my degree class were women and I’m so proud to see so many girls choosing a path they love. Thanks to the incredible women who came before us, this is a reality, and I’m excited to see these women move into the STEM workforce.”

Eve Hislop, BioChem Placement Student in Biosciences

“For me, it was my mum who gave me the space and encouragement to be whoever I needed to be. She raised me with strong role models, including herself, teaching me not to be defined by my gender but by my mind. While full equality in science may not be immediate, young girls must believe in their potential. With competence, courage, and determination, they can achieve their dreams and pave the way for future generations. The world needs the talents of all its people to solve our greatest challenges.”
